Build Nigeria 2026 · Off-Grid Power

LYTE Box

Shows how your solar system is performing, estimates how long your battery will last, and alerts you to unusual behaviou

Built by Lyte, University of Lagos

The problem

You rely on solar power, but knowing how much battery energy is left—or whether the system is charging properly—is often guesswork. Power can run out unexpectedly, interrupting work, stopping essential equipment and putting refrigerated goods at risk. Charging problems can also go unnoticed until performance drops. Without clear information, it is difficult to plan your power use or know when to call an installer.

Who it is for

Homes, shops and small businesses using solar power—especially those running freezers or other essential equipment—who want clearer information about their existing system without replacing it.

Latest from the team

Our first hardware prototype has been assembled and powered on for bench testing. We are now developing the device software and mobile app to show live readings, battery estimates and useful alerts over local Wi-Fi, without requiring internet access. A frozen-food business owner has agreed to be a possible first pilot user once testing is complete.
