LeadSense

It detects the amount of heavy metals, especially Lead and Cadmium in the blood of pregnant women and Neonates

Built by RoboCraft, University of Lagos

The problem

Heavy metal poisoning is a serious and largely invisible threat to maternal and newborn health in Nigeria. Lead and cadmium enter the body through artisanal mining in the north, petroleum pollution in the Niger Delta, informal battery recycling, and everyday products such as cosmetics and cookware. These metals cross the placenta and pass into breast milk, and they are linked to low birth weight, preterm birth, and lasting damage to children’s brain development. The 2010 Zamfara lead poisoning outbreak, in which hundreds of young children died, showed how severe the consequences can be when exposure goes undetected.
