Build Nigeria 2026 · Smart Agriculture

HerdScan

A smart, handheld livestock identification and record-keeping system designed for Nigerian farmers.

Built by Embedz, Bayero University Kano

The problem

Many livestock farmers rely on conventional numbered ear tags and manual records to identify their animals and track their health histories. When managing a large herd, finding a particular animal and matching it to its records can be time-consuming. Paper records can become difficult to maintain, misplaced or incomplete, making it harder to retrieve treatment histories, track vaccinations and monitor animal health. Replacing existing identification systems with expensive alternatives can also be a financial burden, particularly for small and medium-scale farmers. These challenges make livestock management harder and increase avoidable costs.

Who it is for

HerdScan is designed for cattle farmers, livestock ranches, veterinarians and animal health workers in Nigeria who need a practical, affordable way to identify individual animals and manage their records.

Latest from the team

HerdScan has received approval for its initial Build Plan and is progressing towards hardware implementation. Current priorities include validating animal identification methods, developing the handheld device, and working towards reliable offline record storage and wireless data transfer. The goal is to make livestock identification and record-keeping more accessible to farmers without requiring a constant internet connection.
